Civil status
The Civil Status Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is responsible for providing the following services:
1- Issuance of various Civil Status Certificates:
Algerian citizens born abroad or those whose marriage certificates were established abroad and first-degree relatives of persons who died abroad, can obtain copies of civil status certificates (birth, marriage, death) that have been previously recorded in the registers of our diplomatic or consular posts. These documents may be issued at :
the Civil Status Service of the Ministry; and the Civil Status Services of all municipalities throughout the national territory:
2- Transcription of Civil Status Certificates:
Algerian citizens, born or married abroad, or relatives of a deceased person abroad, can submit a request for the transcription of Civil Status Certificates at the Civil Status Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which will subsequently forward the related files to the territorial competent diplomatic or consular post for transcription in the registers kept by the latter.
The required file consists of the following documents of the applicant:
· Birth Certificates transcription file :
In the case where the father is Algerian:
- Original Birth Certificate (full and recent copy of less than one year), issued by the town hall of the birth-place abroad ;
- Original Birth Certificate of the father;
- Original Birth Certificate of the grandfather.
In the case where the mother is Algerian and the father is a foreigner:
- Original Birth Certificate (full and recent copy of less than one year), issued by the town hall of the birth-place abroad;
- Original Birth Certificate of the mother;
- Original Birth Certificate of the maternal grandfather;
- Birth Certificate of the maternal great-grandfather;
In the case of Algerian nationality acquisition by presidential decree:
- Original Birth Certificate (full and recent copy of less than one year), issued by the town hall of the birth-place abroad;
- Copy of the naturalization decree;
Observation:
The Civil Status Office can request additional documents such as recent Algerian nationality certificate issued by a court, or a transcription order issued by the judicial authorities, in the event of material errors in the provided documents which may prevent the transcription of these certificates.
· Marriage Certificate transcription file:
In the case where the husband is Algerian:
- Original Marriage Certificate (full and recent copy), issued by the town hall of
the place of marriage abroad;
- Original Birth Certificate of the husband (recent);
- Birth Certificates of the husband's father and grandfather;
- Original Birth Certificate of the wife (recent);
- Copy of the husband's Identification Card.
In the case where the wife is Algerian and the husband if a foreigner:
- Original Marriage Certificate (full and recent copy), issued by the town hall of the place of marriage abroad.
- Original Birth Certificate of the wife (recent);
- Original Birth Certificates of the wife's father and grandfather;
- Original and recent Birth Certificate of the husband;
- Certificate of conversion to Islam, if the husband is a national of a non-Muslim country, issued by the competent and duly authorized authorities.
· Death Certificate transcription file:
- Original Death Certificate issued by the town hall of the death place abroad;
- Original Birth Certificate of the deceased;
- Original Birth Certificates of the deceased's father and grandfather.
3- Corrections of Civil Status Documents:
The Civil Status Office corrects material errors contained in the civil status documents issued by the diplomatic and consular posts on the basis of an Order of Correction issued by an Algerian court.
