Mr. Attaf received his Sahrawi counterpart

Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr.Ahmed Attaf, received Monday the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Mr.Mohamed Yeslem Beissat.

The meeting focused on reviewing and assessing the outcomes of the discussions held, in October, at the UN Security Council on Western Sahara, which resulted in the adoption of Resolution 2797 renewing the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

In this regard, both ministers commended the resolution for upholding the fundamental principles of a just, lasting, and definitive solution to the Western Sahara conflict. They particularly welcomed its emphasis on the need for negotiations between the two parties, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front, its requirement that any solution be mutually acceptable, and its insistence that such a solution enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination.

The ministers also welcomed the renewal of the MINURSO's mandate for one year, in line with the UN Secretary-General's recommendation to the Security Council.

Against this backdrop, the two ministers exchanged views regarding the prospects of the UN-led political process aimed at helping both parties reach a just, lasting, and definitive settlement of the Western Sahara issue, emphasizing that any resolution must guarantee the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination, in line with relevant international law and the UN's established principles on decolonization.
