Security Council: Algeria puts draft resolution in blue on Palestine’s accession

Algeria on Tuesday put its draft resolution in blue at the United Nations (UN) Security Council, recommending to the General Assembly the admission of the State of Palestine as a UN member. This is the final step before the draft resolution is voted upon by the Security Council members.
This move is firmly backed by the Arab Group in New York. It builds upon Algeria’s unwavering diplomatic efforts, following the instructions of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to gather widespread support so as to grant the State of Palestine full membership status at the UN.
The vote on this draft resolution is set for Thursday, April 18th at 3 p.m. (New York time), which is 8 p.m. (Algiers time).
Following Algeria’s decision, the Arab Group in New York released a statement expressing its “firm support” for the State of Palestine’s admission to the United Nations, underscoring that this is “a long-awaited measure that should have been implemented not only since 2011, but as far back as 1948.”
The Arab Group has further urged all the Security Council members to “vote in favor” of the draft resolution presented by Algeria, while also calling the members of the Council to “at least abstain from hindering this decisive initiative.”
